A century ago, streetcars were the most efficient way to travel the streets of Spokane. Spokane Street Railway was the first mass transit system, beginning with horses in 1888. They, and numerous small streetcar companies, developed streetcar lines all over Spokane for quick and efficient transportation. These streetcars are no longer present, however you can still see some remaining portions of their tracks in cobblestone roads while traveling around parts of Manito or West Central.

Streetcar lines provided one avenue of Spokane growth. Washington Water Power (WWP) knew that streetcars were a primary driver of residential development outside downtown areas, allowing a city to expand and increase electrical demand. WWP bought numerous small streetcar companies, including the Spokane Street Railway Company beginning in 1891. By 1910, streetcar lines were owned and operated by two competing companies: Washington Water Power and Spokane Traction Company. Combined, the electric trolleys logged 24 million rides, boasting the most efficient way to travel the streets of Spokane. By 1936 popularity declined due to increase in automobiles and the streetcars were burned and replaced with buses.

This cache is part of the 2018 Spokane Trains And Railroads GeoChallenge. Spokane has a strong history as a major train hub, and in many ways still is. The STAR Challenge will take geocachers on an adventure, finding caches in places significant to railroads past and present. You will visit locations featuring retired train cars, streetcar rails, bridges, graves and rail yards. Successful completion of the STAR Challenge is rewarded with a trackable Geocoin.
  • All caches begin with the series name STAR: followed by a location-specific name so they are easy to search. We also made a STAR Bookmark of the caches.
  • To qualify for a Geocoin, find the code word or stamp in each geocache and record it on your passport.
  • Visit STAR Challenge and get started today.
