Non ci sono dubbi in merito al luogo di morte del Caravaggio, ovvero Porto Ercole.

Tuttavia fino a pochi anni fa c'era la convinzione che fosse morto sulla spiaggia della Feniglia, (dove una stele ricorda l'evento), invece nel 2001 nei registri della parrocchia di Sant'Erasmo a Porto Ercole, in un libro dei conti del 1656 viene rinvenuto l'atto di morte del Caravaggio che cita testualmente "A dì. 18 luglio 1609 nel ospitale di S. Maria Ausiliatrice morse Michel Angelo Merisi da Caravaggio dipintore per malattia".

Ad una prima lettura salta subito agli occhi che l'anno citato è 1609 e non 1610, tuttavia sembra che l'errore sia dovuto al fatto che nell'area di Porto Ercole, al tempo non fosse ancora stato introdotto il calendario gregoriano, oppure potrebbe trattarsi di una svista di trascrizione.

Tuttavia l'atto non lascia spazio a dubbi e così è iniziata anche la ricerca della sepoltura del Caravaggio.

All'epoca della morte, gli stranieri di misere condizioni venivano sepolti nel cimitero di San Sebastiano di Porto Ercole e sicuramente lì venne sepolto il Caravaggio.

Tuttavia nel 1956 a causa dei lavori per l'ampliamento della strada di accesso al paese, gli scheletri dell'antico camposanto vennero trasferiti in una cripta dell'attuale cimitero, e qui si sono concentrate le ricerche del gruppo di scienziati, che dopo aver sondato anche le cripte del forte spagnolo e la cripta della chiesa di Sant'Erasmo, hanno selezionato gli scheletri rinvenuti ed effettuato numerosi test scientifici di assoluta attendibilità.

Arriviamo infine al 16 giugno 2010 quando l'equipe di ricercatori ha ufficialmente sostenuto che le ossa ritrovate, con una percentuale di sicurezza pari all'85% sono quelle di Michelangelo Merisi detto il Caravaggio.

L'arca funeraria in cui sono state deposte le ossa nel luglio del 2014, si trova a Porto Ercole, tra Via Nuova e Via Principe Umberto.

There is no doubt about the place of death of Caravaggio, or Porto Ercole.

At a first reading it is immediately obvious that the year cited is 1609 and not 1610, but it seems that the error is due to the fact that in the area of ​​Porto Ercole, at the time the Gregorian calendar had not yet been introduced, or it could be a transcription oversight. However, the act leaves no room for doubt and so began the search for the burial of Caravaggio.

At the time of death, foreigners of poor conditions were buried in the cemetery of San Sebastiano di Porto Ercole and certainly there Caravaggio was buried there.

However, in 1956 because of the works for the widening of the access road to the village, the skeletons of the ancient cemetery were transferred to a crypt of the present cemetery, and here the research of the group of scientists has been concentrated, that after having probed also the crypts of the Spanish fort and the crypt of the church of Sant'Erasmo, have selected the skeletons found and carried out numerous scientific tests of absolute reliability.

Finally we arrive at June 16, 2010 when the team of researchers officially claimed that the bones found, with a safety percentage of 85% are those of Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio.

The funerary ark in which the bones were laid in July 2014, is located in Porto Ercole, between Via Nuova and Via Principe Umberto.
