Geocache Description:

This EarthCache will take you to the Desborough Cross. The cross has been in Desborough for many years, with many believing that it was an old gate post for an old house. It has been in Desborough at least from 1849 onwards, and is about 81 miles from London.

Sandstone and limestone are both made up of layers of particles called sediments, which are deposited by wind or water, then make sedimentary rock. Sometimes, dead animals or plants in the layers can form fossils. Sedimentation is the collective name for processes that cause mineral or organic particles (detritus) to settle in place. Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed primarily of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Breccia is rock consisting of angular fragments of stones cemented by finer sediments. In earth science, erosion is the action of surface processes (such as water flow or wind) that remove soil, rock, or dissolved material from one location on the Earth's crust, and then transport it to another location (not to be confused with weathering which involves no movement). Weathering is the breaking down of rocks, soil, and minerals as well as wood and artificial materials through contact with the Earth's atmosphere, water, and biological organisms.

Stones such as granite, limestone and sandstone are very good for building structures because of their durability and hardens also they are very easy to shape into bricks for houses and walls.

Question one - Please describe the rock - what colour is it, what size are the grains in the rock?

Question two - Roughly what size is each sand stone block?

Question three - Is the stone rough or smooth touch? Please explain why you gave that as your answer.

Please could you send your answer by either the Message Centre or by email on the day you write your log. I will check them within 1-2 days. Hope you enjoyed this one. Have a great day.
