Geocache Description:

Cache is located at the Little Horsehead Lake boat landing on County Hwy B. Note- You may need a tweezers to remove the log.

During Prohibition, moonshining in the town was an occupation respected by most residents. Court dockets contain numerous cases of residents who “did unlawfully have in their passion for the purpose of sale, and did then and there unlawfully sell, vend, deal, and traffic in, and for the purpose of evading the law, did then and there unlawfully give away certain intoxicating liquors, the same, then and there being known as ‘moonshine’ and then and there being unlawfully privately manufactured distilled intoxicating liquors, contrary to the statues and laws of the state of Wisconsin”

Some of the moonshiners came to the area from Kentucky, and the Kentuckian faction knew the moonshining trade very well. Their families built stills in the forest behind the town and the tried and true recipes they used produced plenty of liquor to keep everyone happy. Residents of the town later stated that at one time in Winegar, you could knock on almost any door in town and make a deal for some moonshine. That is, until the logging mill managers took it upon themselves to crack down on the trade.

The company paid a few supervisors to enforce Prohibition in Winegar, and “to get rid of them “goldarn Kentucks” who made moonshine so well. (see Winegar Reflections- “Constable Rutherford” cache to learn more about this…)
