Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the Shanty Boy Hill Cemetery located near the ball fields at the north end of Presque Isle.

This cache is a tribute to all those who lived and died to make this area flourish in its infancy….

Back when the town was known first as Fosterville, and then Winegar, logging was the main business. Everyone in town was associated with the logging operations, either working in the mill, one of the support facilities or, in the case of the lumberjacks, working in the woods, cutting the trees and hauling them out to be sent to the mill.

Just as the jobs at the mill were dangerous, so was the life of the lumberjack. A slip of an axe, a twisting tree falls in the wrong direction, and a man’s life is cut short.

Prior to the creation of Evergreen Cemetery a few miles west of Winegar, many of those who met their fate in the forests surrounding the town were buried in a small cemetery at the north end of the town. This area came to be known as Shanty Boy Hill Cemetery.

The cache is not located near any graves. Please do not disturb anything in the area.

Permission for this cache placement was obtained from Scott Mcpherson, President, Presque Isle Chamber of Commerce.
