Skaftáreldar - The Laki eruption
On 8 June 1783, a 25 km long fissure with 130 craters opened with phreatomagmatic explosions because of the groundwater interacting with the rising basalt magma. The eruption which is usually called Skaftáreldar ("Skaftá fires"), is one of two of the largest lava flows that have occurred on Earth in recorded history. The lava flow, which flowed from the Laki vent, fell into two main streams to inhabited areas, on each side of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. For the eight months during the eruption, 12 km³ of basalt lava flowed onto the surface and covered about 565 km² of land or about a half percent of Iceland’s area. During the advance of the lava, Reverend Jón Steingrímsson held an Eldmessa ("Mass of fire") and the lava stopped near his church. But for residents of the region, and Iceland as a whole, the results of the eruption were catastrophic: This time is known as "Móðuharðindin" (the Haze Famine), a period of famine and disease named for the ash mist from the eruption.

Skaftáreldahraun
The Laki lava flows, Skaftáreldahraun ("Skaftá fires lava") or Eldhraun (“Fire lava”), is a lava flow which spread out across the highlands and descended in three main branches to inhabitant areas. Two of them merged together west of Kirkjubæjarklaustur in the gorge of river Skaftá. There are hundrets of lava caves in the field. All around thick woolly fringe moss forms a continuous layer which gives off a grey colour when dry, but a beautiful green after rain.

Types of lava
There are several types of lava which can be found around the world. The two most common forms of lava are ʻAʻā Lava and Pāhoehoe Lava.

ʻAʻā Lava
ʻAʻā is basaltic lava characterized by a rough or rubbly surface composed of broken lava blocks called clinker. The loose, broken, and sharp, spiny surface of an ʻaʻā flow makes hiking difficult and slow. The clinkery surface actually covers a massive dense core, which is the most active part of the flow. As pasty lava in the core travels downslope, the clinkers are carried along at the surface. At the leading edge of an ʻaʻā flow, however, these cooled fragments tumble down and are buried by the advancing flow. This produces a layer of lava fragments both at the bottom and top of an ʻaʻā flow.

Pāhoehoe Lava
Pāhoehoe (from Hawaiian meaning "smooth, unbroken lava"), also spelled pahoehoe, is basaltic lava that has a smooth, billowy, undulating, or ropy surface. These surface features are due to the movement of very fluid lava under a congealing surface crust. A pāhoehoe flow typically advances as a series of small lobes and toes that continually break out from a cooled crust. It also forms lava tubes where the minimal heat loss maintains low viscosity. The surface texture of pāhoehoe flows varies widely, displaying all kinds of bizarre shapes often referred to as lava sculpture. With increasing distance from the source, pāhoehoe flows may change into ʻaʻā flows in response to heat loss and consequent increase in viscosity. Pahoehoe lavas typically have a temperature of 1,100 to 1,200 °C (2,010 to 2,190 °F).

Skaftáreldar
Hinn 8. júní 1783 opnaði 25 km langur sprungur með 130 gígnum með sprungum í sprungum vegna grunnvatnsins í sambandi við hækkandi basaltmagma. Gosið, sem venjulega er kallað Skaftáreldar, er einn af tveimur stærstu hraunflæðunum sem hafa átt sér stað á jörðinni í skráðum sögu. Hraunflæðið, sem flæði frá Laki ventanum, féll í tvo aðalstrauma að byggðarsvæðum, hvoru megin við Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Í átta mánuði í gosinu flúðu 12 km³ af basalt hrauni yfir á yfirborðið og náði um 565 km² af landi eða um hálfa prósent af landinu. Skaftáreldahraun
Laki hraunið, Skaftáreldahraun eða Eldhraun, er hraunflæði sem dreifist út um hálendið og niður í þremur aðalgreinum á íbúðarhverfum. Tvær þeirra sameinuðu vestur af Kirkjubæjarklaustri í Skaftá. Það eru hundruð hraunhellar á vellinum. Allt í kringum þykkt woolly fringe mosa myndar samfellda lag sem gefur af gráum lit þegar þurrt, en fallegt grænn eftir rigningu.

Tegundir hrauns

ʻAʻā Lava

The laus, brotinn og skarpur, spiny yfirborð 'a'a flæði gerir göngu erfitt og hægur. The clinkery yfirborðið nær raunverulega gríðarlegu þéttum kjarna, sem er mesti hluti flæðisins. Eins og suðurhraun í kjarna fer niður í dalnum eru klifurnar fluttar með á yfirborðinu. Hins vegar eru þessar kældu brot í brúninni á "flæði" og falla niður og grafinn af framflæðinu. Þetta myndar lag af hraunbrotum bæði neðst og efst á "flæði".

Pāhoehoe Lava
Pāhoehoe (frá Hawaiian merkingu "slétt, óbrotinn hraun"), einnig stafsett pahoehoe, er basalt hraun sem hefur slétt, billowy, bølgandi eða ropy yfirborði. Þessi yfirborðseiginleikar eru vegna hreyfingar mjög fljótandi hraun undir jarðskorpu. A phoehoe flæði framfarir venjulega sem lítill lítill lobes og tær sem stöðugt brjótast út úr kældu skorpu. Það myndar einnig hraunrör þar sem lágmarks hitastig heldur lágmarkseigju. Yfirborð áferð pāhoehoe rennsli breytilegt og sýnir alls konar undarleg form sem oft er nefnt lava skúlptúr.
