This geocahce has been placed with permission from the supervisor at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1963 as an overlay of NASA's John F. Kennedy Space Center for the protection of migratory birds. Consisting of 140,000 acres, the Refuge provides a wide variety of habitats: coastal dunes, saltwater marshes, freshwater impoundments, scrub, pine flatwoods, and hardwood hammocks that provide habitat for more than 1,500 species of plants and animals and 15 federally listed species. The geocache is placed near the viewing platform at the trail head of Cruickshank Trail. To get to Cruickshank Trail, the visitor must travel on Black Point Wildlife Drive. There is a $10 per car daily fee to access the driving trail - payments can only be made in cash. The visitor may also use one of these valid passes to access Black Point: Refuge Annual Pass, America the Beautiful pass, Senior Pass, Military Pass, Access Pass. The trail is located at stop 9, which has a parking area and bathrooms. This trail is approximately 5-miles and will take the hiker in a loop through a wetland ecosystem. This is an important migratory bird area and a wide array of species can be seen here in the winter months. *Black Point Wildlife Drive is subject to road closures due to maintenance or excessive rainfall, which can cause damage to the road. Please check the refuge facebook page for updates on road closures. You may also call the refuge visitor center at (321) 861-0669 for updates.*
