In 1609 a group of pilgrims led by William Brewster and Pastor John Robinson arrived in Leiden (Leyden), a city famous for its textile production and known for its tolerance of religious beliefs. This is their story – welcome to old Leyden.
In the 1600’s, the English Calvinists were persecuted by Queen Elizabeth and her successor James I. Around 1608 a number of those from a separatist branch fled to Leiden, Holland. At the time, Leiden was the second largest city in Holland and home to a famous university. It was a bustling city driven by a thriving textile industry and was known as a place where those of different religious views could find tolerance, uncommon for the time. The Leidenaars had only relatively recently themselves dramatically thrown off Spanish Catholic oppression in the Siege of Leiden in 1573-4.
The request for permission to settle in Leiden was met with the reply: “Geen eerlicke persoonen weygeren vrije ende lybre incompst omme binnen deze stede…haer woonplaets te nemen”- “No honest persons will be refused free and unconstrained entry to the city to take up residence”.
From 1620 a part of the Pilgrim community emigrated from Leiden to North America. There were several reasons for leaving. The freedom of religion was limited in the Netherlands as well. Also, the threat of war loomed large due to the end of the Twelve Year Truce with Spain in 1621. As well, the economic situation of the Pilgrims was not always stable. Finally, they were afraid that their children would integrate too much into the Dutch church and Dutch secular life, which they considered to be too licentious in comparison to their austere preferences. More than half of the group remained in Leiden and eventually became indistinguishable from the locals, whose ancestors still live in Leiden today – a living echo of the past perhaps passing you on the street right now.

NEDERLANDS
In 1609 arriveerde een groep Engelse vluchtelingen in Leiden. In eigen land konden zij hun Protestantse geloof niet vrij uitoefenen en daarom weken zij uit naar de Nederlandse Republiek. Hun leiders waren William Brewster en John Robinson. Deze vluchtelingen zouden bekend worden onder de naam Pilgrims.
De ongeveer 300 Pilgrims woonden op verschillende plaatsen in Leiden. John Robinson kocht een huis met erf bij de Pieterskerk. Daar liet hij 21 huisjes bouwen voor zijn volgelingen. Het gebied stond ook bekend als de Engelse Poort. De huisjes moesten in 1683 plaats maken voor het Jean Pesijnhof. Omdat zij vreesden dat hun identiteit gevaar liep, vertrokken de Pilgrims vanaf 1620 in groepjes uit Leiden. Zij gingen op weg naar de nieuwe wereld: Amerika. Daar zouden zij later gezien worden als de grondleggers van de Verenigde Staten.
Overigens bleef ongeveer de helft achter in Leiden. Hun namen werden vernederlandst. Zo werd de naam ‘Coit’ veranderd in Koet, en werd ‘McRae’ Makreel. Overigens haalde John Robinson Amerika niet. Hij overleed in 1625 en werd begraven in de Pieterskerk. Een aantal Amerikaanse Presidenten heeft Pilgrims als voorouders, waaronder Franklin Delano Roosevelt, vader en zoon Bush en Barack Obama. De voorouders van Obama, de familie Blossom, woonden hier, aan het Pieterskerkhof.

EN: Some of the locals enjoyed drinking in the taverns. We did not approve of such licentious pastimes. Jan Steen was a local tavern owner and well-known Dutch painter of ribald scenes. He lived from H I J K to L M N O.
