Geocache Description:

Can't see the wood for the LAUREL

This cache is part of the series 'Can't see the wood for the trees'. It tests your knowledge of the trees and shrubbery of the British woodlands and also enables you to help your child's education too, if you decide to bring them out for the day geocaching.

There are several types of laurel bush. This particular type of laurel bush is the portugese Laurel and is identified with its shiny, oval leaves. Laurel is an excellent plant for hedging and screening. It is evergreen and quick-growing, infact, it is the fastest growing evergreen hedging plant that isn't a conifer (i.e. Leylandii or Thuja).

The Laurel is an evergreen shrub or small tree, variable in size and sometimes reaching 7–18 m (23–59 ft) tall. The genus Laurus includes four accepted species, whose diagnostic key characters often overlap.

The Bay Laurel is dioecious (unisexual), with male and female flowers on separate plants. Each flower is pale yellow-green, about 1 cm (0.39 in) diameter, and they are borne in pairs beside a leaf. The leaves are glabrous, 6–12 cm (2.4–4.7 in) long and 2–4 cm (0.79–1.57 in) broad, with an entire (untoothed) margin. On some leaves the margin undulates. The fruit is a small, shiny black berry-like drupe about 1 cm (0.39 in) long that contains one seed.

I like my caches to be found, and I am always happy to help you find / solve them, but, the rules of geocaching are:

1. Find the cache.

2. Sign the logsheet and log it online to say that you found it.
Any online logs without a signed log sheet will result in online logs being deleted.

3. Return the cache exactly as you found it. DO NOT TAKE IT HOME

*UPDATE 30.12.2018* After looking at some of the logs, I felt it was necessary to upload some photos. Please look at the gallery. There is a public right of way along this footpath, as shown with the signposts. The signs that stipulate private property are for the field adjacent to the footpath. There is opportunity to find the LAUREL cache along this route and you are able to move freely between the ASH cache and MAPLE cache.

*UPDATE 28.03.2021* Please be gentle when handling the cache. There is no need to pull the container out of the camoflage. You just need to remove the lid and extract the log book in order to sign it.

The cache is now on a large tree behind the laurel and the holly trees.

Congratulations to Sarasdor for the FTF!
