Historic Trent Ave Bridge

This is an important spot for Spokane rail history. Two bridges crossed the river here. One bridge, the Olive Street Bridge, was for streetcars, which used this bridge for over 30 years. The streetcars were operated by the Spokane Traction Company. In 1908, the Spokane Traction Company merged with the Interurban Railroad.

Immediately to the south of that was the Trent Avenue Bridge. This was used by the Interurban Railroad (Spokane and Inland Empire Railroad (SIERR)).

To the east of the monument, you see what is left of the repair shops. At one time, there were two buildings at right angles to one another. One was for the streetcars and the other for the railroad. Today, all that is left is the streetcar shop. If you look, you can still see the numbered repair bays on the east side of the building as you drive by on Hamilton Street.

The Spokane & Inland Empire Railroad (SIERR Building) at McKinstry Station was built in 1907. Designated a national, historic landmark in 2010, through McKinstry’s efforts, the SIERR Building survives as the largest, most intact example of an electric streetcar facility from its era.

This cache is part of the 2018 Spokane Trains And Railroads GeoChallenge. Spokane has a strong history as a major train hub, and in many ways still is. The STAR Challenge will take geocachers on an adventure, finding caches in places significant to railroads past and present. You will visit locations featuring retired train cars, streetcar rails, bridges, graves and rail yards. Successful completion of the STAR Challenge is rewarded with a trackable Geocoin.
  • All caches begin with the series name STAR: followed by a location-specific name so they are easy to search. We also made a STAR Bookmark of the caches.
  • To qualify for a Geocoin, find the code word or stamp in each geocache and record it on your passport.
  • Visit STAR Challenge and get started today.

The Spokane Trains And Railroads GeoChallenge is sponsored by Cache Advance, and by donation from local cachers. We hope you enjoy!
