Thousands of Veterans travel Brenner Avenue every day. If you look to the Northwest you can see the Salisbury Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The Salisbury VA Medical Center system has facilities in three locations: Salisbury, Kernersville, and Charlotte. These locations serve the health care needs of approimately 100,000 Veterans. Also located on the medical center grounds is the Salisbury National Cemetery Annex. The annex was established when the Salisbury National Cemetery, located at 202 Government Road, was almost full and had no further room for expansion. Approximately 40 acres of the medical center were donated and the ground breaking took place on Pearl Harbor Day 1999. The annex will serve 20,000 Veterans and family members over the next 50 to 75 years. As of Memorial Day 2012, the original cemetery was closed to new burials, except for spouses of those already buried. The original cemetery has about 7000 markers.
You are in the parking lot of a nonprofit Veterans Service Organization. This organization traces its roots back to 1899 when Spanish-American War and Philippine Insurrection Veterans founded local organizations to secure the rights and benefits for those who served. During that time, there was no medical care or pension rights for Veterans; they were left to care for themselves. This movement quickly gained momentum and has led to numerous programs that support Veterans, Service Members, and their families.
