Combretum zeyheri
Raasblaar / Large-fruited bushwillow
This is the tree with the largest four-winged fruit in the Combretum family in South Africa. They also have big leaves which when they become dry and the wind blow, can make a rattling sound when they rub against each other – giving them the Afrikaans name Raasblaar (which means noisy leaf). Also when your walk over the fallen leaves under these trees, is makes a loud crackling sound. The wood is a good fire wood as well.
Birds:
Insects and insect eating birds are present during flowering season. Bulbuls, Drongos, Cuckoos, Wood Hoopoes, Eremomelas and Shrikes are common in these trees. Guinea fowls like to sleep in these large trees. Babblers like to search around on the ground between the leaves for insects treats.
Animals:
Big browsers such as Nyalas and Kudus eat the leaves.
