Tidligere kunne man kun komme til Sommarøya med bil ved å kjøre langs sørsida på Kvaløya via blant annet Tisnes, Mjelde, Bakkejord, Greipstad og Brensholmen. I 1996 kom imidlertid tunnelen fra Sandneshamn ut til Brensholmen/Sommarøy. Dette har gjort avstanden dit betraktelig kortere, noe som har tilført folk i Kattfjorden nye muligheter i form av jobb og rekreasjon. Og det tar litt kortere tid å kjøre fra Tromsø til Sommarøy.

Previously, one could only reach Sommarøya by car by driving along the southern side of Kvaløya via, among other places, Tisnes, Mjelde, Bakkejord, Greipstad and Brensholmen. In 1996, however, the tunnel from Sandneshamn to Brensholmen / Sommarøy was built.
