Star Trek first aired over 50 years ago. Created by Gene Roddenberry in 1964, the franchise has spawned numerous television series, films, comics, novels, games, and fan fiction...and now there's a Trek-themed GeoArt series in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest.
Pets provide companionship, which can be beneficial at home and especially when traveling on long missions. The concept of pet ownership even extends to other species; Romulans have set'leths, Cardassians have wompats, and Klingons have monster dogs and domesticated targs. Some Starfleet crew members brought pets aboard starships. Archer's dog, who was especially fond of cheese, was the only pet shown to accompany crew members on away missions. I hope Archer brought poop bags when bringing his dog to the surface of other planets.
