Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the published coordinates and is not in the Nature Reserve.

Ahead of you is the Coombe Hill Canal & Meadows Nature Reserve. You may now choose to make a detour to explore the nature reserve, or turn right to continue along the Poppy's Potter route. If you do decide to explore the nature reserve, please take note of the signs and keep dogs on a lead to avoid disturbing ground nesting birds.

The Nature Reserve is a very special site for wetland birds, particularly waders and migrating waterfowl but also watch out for birds of prey, including hen harrier, peregrine falcon and goshawk.

Snipe, redshank, oystercatcher, lapwing and curlew are just a few of the many species sighted here, as well as spectacular numbers of over wintering wildfowl during times of high water.

One of the best sites in Gloucestershire, Coombe Hill boasts 17 species of dragonflies & damselflies including the hairy dragonfly, scarce chaser and the impressive emperor dragonfly.

The Nature reserve includes the Coombe Hill canal, which runs 2.75 miles from Coombe Hill Basin to the River Severn near Wainlode Hill. It was opened in 1796 and closed 80 years later in 1876 after the only lock was damaged by flooding.

The land of the Nature reserve and the canal itself often floods in winter, attracting hundreds of wildfowl.

Use the information board near the bridge to find the final coordinates for the cache.
