You can’t deny the impact felt when seeing the line of American Flags gracing the East side of the Avenue M-N overpass. Whether driving, biking, walking the overpass, riding a power chair or viewing from afar, they stand out in all their majestic glory. And they do often literally stand out from their poles in the unchecked wind that blows, seemingly, constantly over and through the City of Kearney, Nebraska.
The overpass was completed in 2002 and local VFW Post 759, during a ceremony featuring a 21-gun salute and about 50 veterans forming a color guard, erected and dedicated the flags on December 6, 2002.
Prior to the completion of the overpass, Post Commander Michael Streeter spearheaded a VFW committee project culminating in placing flags on the Veteran’s Memorial Overpass to honor the many veterans who have fought for our country.
Today, as this geocache is posted, all poles fly an American flag though in the past, there have been American flags along with those representing every branch of the military as well as POW/MIA flags. Please enjoy them as you hunt for the hide and since there are two to three trains passing through Kearney every hour, you might be there to experience that as well.
Be sure to sign the log and put the cache container back in the same way you found it so that it presents the same challenge to all seekers. The log sheet will be checked periodically to see that website logs match. Logs appearing on the website but not on the log sheet will be deleted.
For those who will be driving a vehicle, there is a parking area on the North side of the overpass. See parking coordinates. The walkway across the overpass is barrier protected so older children can probably be included on this hunt though that is your call as you know your own children better than anyone. Same goes for dogs on leash. Just be careful and keep a watchful eye on everyone with you because the walking area is near fast-moving vehicles of all sizes.
At no time will it be necessary to climb any of the structure/s next to the walk or to move off of the walkway. If you feel tempted to do so, just step back and think things over.
While you are there, you can hunt GC1VF2H BACK and forth TO SCHOOL if you have not found it yet.
Good Luck!
Congratulations to Jerry+Mary on making the FTF log! 5/27/18 at 8:54 AM
