Indigo Buntings are omnivores that eat insects during the Summer and seeds during the Winter. They have a life expectancy of 2-3 years. They are 4.5 – 5.1 inches long weighing .53oz as adults. They have a 7-9 inch wing span and a gestational period lasting 12-13 days producing 3-4 eggs. Indigo Buntings may produce 2 broods per season. Babies fledge between 10 & 12 days old. Indigo Buntings are solitary birds, however they will roost during the Winter in flocks. Males defend a territory but can have several females nesting within his territory. Similar to other blue birds, Indigo Buntings lack blue pigment. Their vibrant color comes from microscopic structures within their feathers that refract & reflect blue light.

Indigo Buntings migrate at night using the stars to guide them. The birds possess an internal clock that enables them to continually adjust their angle of orientation to a star, even as that star moves through the night sky. Young Indigo Buntings learn to sing from nearby males, but not from their father. Those that live in the same neighborhood will share an identical song with very few variations. They communicate through vocalization and visual cues. The oldest recorded Indigo Bunting was 13 years & 3 months old. It was banded, released & recaptured in Ohio.
