Geocache Description:

SOS 18 Banner

Ireland, Great Britain and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Ireland is an island in the North Atlantic. It is separated from Great Britain to its east by the North Channel, the Irish Sea, and St George's Channel. Politically, Ireland is divided between the Republic of Ireland (officially named Ireland), which covers five-sixths of the island, and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom.1

Now this is where things get a little confusing, in English, Great Britain refers to both the island and the nation consisting of those countries on the island of Great Britain: England, Scotland and Wales. The Swedish term, Storbritannien, similarly also refers to the island of Great Britain but then differs from English in which country it defines referring rather to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland instead of just Great Britain.

Despite the political division of the island and the often violent history of these people, many beliefs are shared between these nations. One such belief is that of Leprechauns, a type of fairy, usually depicted as little bearded men, wearing a coat and hat, who partake in mischief. They are solitary creatures who spend their time making and mending shoes and have a hidden pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.4 And, since rainbows can clearly cross national borders, perhaps if you're lucky you may just get the chance to catch a Leprechaun, or find his pot of gold, whilst still in "Storbritannien".
