Henry Knauber is a hiking legend in this area. At the time this cache is publishing in May 2018, he is 98 years old. He's known for liking trails that are direct and this seems to be one he built to get to the top of Stony Mountain. Take the well-constructed Appalachian Trail to get a gradual approach. Take the direct H. Knauber to get up the mountain. Take frequent rests; it's steep.
The cache is a bison tube attached to a tree not far from the trail. Keep on going up to get to the cairn at the level spot at top. Proceed further to the left/east and through the marsh to get to the Devils Race Course. Or go to the right/west to go to the Water Tower and follow the trail loop down. NATURALLY we went to the boulder field and looped down on the AT.
We provide waypoints for trail ends bottom/north and top/south for the red-blazed H. Knauber Trail.
