Geocache Description:

Come join a rag tag bunch of cachers on an epic adventure to the top of Sani to see the views (And hopefully some snow) as well as grab a few caches at the top.

Sani Pass heading into Lesotho

The idea is to meet at the bottom of the pass in the morning (At about 08:30, at the trade store ruins) and make our way up to the pub at the top for lunch and a drink, and from there see what we can do with regards to finding caches and/or play in the snow. The plan is to then make our way down again at around 16:30 in order to make the SA border in time and make the bottom of the pass before dark. If there is snow on the pass, it would be better to depart the top at 16:00 latest, as snow and traffic will slow things down a bit.

You are not obligated to travel in convey or meet at the bottom of Sani.

The official event is at 12:00, 11 August 2018, at the Sani Top Pub, and will run for 1.5 hours until 13:30.

Please indicate in your WA log how many people will be joining you.

A few things to consider:

  • Please check up on the listing, as I may update it with further information.
  • Passports are required.
  • The border post is open from 06:00 to 18:00
  • A 4x4 vehicle is required to ascend the pass - This is an SA Border Post requirement. The pass needs high clearance vehicles, and low range, especially in snowy conditions.
  • Ascending vehicles have right of way when descending the pass.
  • Not all geocachers have 4x4's and some have expressed an interest in joining the trip as a passenger with a fellow cacher. If you are able to take one or two fellow cachers, please leave a note in your WA log.
  • Passengers will need to arrange to park their vehicles at a suitable location (ie. Sani Pass Hotel, the border post - The road may or may not be passable for sedan cars to the border post. It generally is however possible to get a normal car to the SA post).
  • Camping and chalets are available at the top if you wish to stay the night. Advance reservations are strongly recommended.
  • Snow may force me to move this event if there is enough to close the pass. Weather could also trap us at the top for a day or few.
  • If the event is affected by snow, a suitable secondary venue will be advised.
  • Any fees and purchases are for your own account.
  • Sani Pass can be a dangerous road - You travel Sani Pass at your own risk - The CO will not be held responsible for any injuries or damages to your vehicle.
