Once a transcontinental railroad between Chicago and Seattle, the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (Milwaukee Road) mainline tracks passed through Tekoa instead of Spokane. Needing to reach the industries in Spokane, the Milwaukee made a branch line to the big city. The railroad built their own tracks from Plummer, Idaho and then used the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company (now Union Pacific) tracks from here to Spokane. The junction just west of the cache is the meeting place of the Milwaukee and Union Pacific. From the junction the Union Pacific tracks reached the Palouse towns and the Silver Valley in Idaho.
This cache is part of the 2018 Spokane Trains And Railroads GeoChallenge. Spokane has a strong history as a major train hub, and in many ways still is. The STAR Challenge will take geocachers on an adventure, finding caches in places significant to railroads past and present. You will visit locations featuring retired train cars, streetcar rails, bridges, graves and rail yards. Successful completion of the STAR Challenge is rewarded with a trackable Geocoin.
