This cache is at a bridge over Deep Creek, near the old townsite of Deep Creek. Across the creek is the Central Washington (CW) line which was purchased by Washington State Department of Transportation in May of 2007. It is now operated by the Eastern Washington Gateway Railroad. The railroad starts in Coulee City and ends in Cheney. It parallels Deep Creek in this location before going past Medical Lake and the newly built grain terminal near I-90.

The line was built by Northern Pacific between 1887 and 1888. The Northern Pacific was heavily invested in grain, which made the areas West of here and on to Cheney prime territory for them to build this route. Around the time the line was created, wheat accounted for as much as 20% of shipments by rail.


This cache is part of the 2018 Spokane Trains And Railroads GeoChallenge. Spokane has a strong history as a major train hub, and in many ways still is. The STAR Challenge will take geocachers on an adventure, finding caches in places significant to railroads past and present. You will visit locations featuring retired train cars, streetcar rails, bridges, graves and rail yards. Successful completion of the STAR Challenge is rewarded with a trackable Geocoin.
