The Old Post Office
Β
Constructed in 1842 on what was origanlly Busselton's first campsite,
the old Post Office was one of only five operating in Western Australia at that time.
Β
The building was also known as Herring's Cottage in recognition of John Frederick Herring,
the first Post Master, who operated the service from his small cottage.Β
Β
While nothing remains of the Post Office,
a Post Box marks the site.Β
THe cast iron post box has a decorative top with ER II in raised lettering on the bottom section of the pillar and is still in use today.
Busselton has some beautiful Garden Art around town, depicting scenes from the Early Settler Days. Please read the Hint, noting the Garden Art. With the Busselton City revamping the local footpaths, the historic old letterbox was removed. Now that the revamp of the footpath has finished, all the locals are waiting patiently to see the return of the historic, old English Letterbox. We do hope it returns one day. There is a plaque amongst the new pavers stating where the original Busselton Post Office was, but as yet, no letterbox.
