Geocache Description:

The cache is placed with permission at an entrance to the Stamp River Dam on the outflow of Great Central Lake. No need to wander down the roadway. As you cross the Stamp River on your way to this cache you will spot the Stamp River Dam to the north.

A dam has sat just below the outlet of Great Central Lake since the mid-1920s, initially placed to support a sawmill on the shores of the lake. The dam was expanded in the late 1950s as the pulp mill was built on the Alberni Inlet and was initially required to store water to help dilute and mitigate the effluent released by the mill. Technological advancements no longer require the dam to serve an industrial purpose and the dam’s primary function is now for fish conservation. Stored water can be released to regulate water flow and temperature to support salmon spawning. A fish ladder on the east side of the dam allow salmon to bypass the dam and enter Great Central Lake.
