This cache was hidden for the Maryland Geocaching Society 2018 Summer Picnic.
This cache will take you near the entrance to a side trail that will bring you to a Champion White Oak Tree. A champion tree is the largest tree of a species based on trunk circumference, height, and average crown spread. There are currently 4 Oak trees in Harford County that have more points than this tree. The current Harford County Champion Oak is located on the Edgewood Area of Aberdeen Proving Ground. The famous Wye Oak, located in Talbot County, was the longstanding Maryland Champion as well as the National Champion White Oak until it was destroyed during a severe thunderstorm on June 6, 2002. The current Maryland State Champion Oak is located in Montgomery County in the C & O Canal National Historic Park.
The cache is hidden off the green trail, but be sure to take the spur to the Champion White Oak to see this impressive tree. The cache is off the trail on the campground side of the trail. At this time it is a black bison hanging on a sapling near to larger trees - see photo dated 5.30.22. I need to determine if this location can support a cache with recent changes in the area.
There is an unactivated trackable for the FTF.
Parking is available at the Deer Creek Picnic area at Susquehanna State Park. Entrance fees are collected on the honor system. The day use service charge for this area is: Daily $2 per vehicle; out-of-state residents $4 per vehicle.
Deer Creek Trail- Blazed in green, the trail begins and ends at the Picnic Area. The Deer Creek Trail has magnificent views and giant trees. A moderate to difficult trail with a distance of 2.1 miles.
Seasonal hunting occurs in the area. Take all precautions during hunting season.
