Geocache Description:

This cache was hidden for the Maryland Geocaching Society 2018 Summer Picnic.

The green trail is primarily through wooded areas, but it does open up and give a brief view of the river from a high vantage point. This cache has a lovely view of the Deer Creek tributory of the Susquehanna River which may be obscured depending on the season.

Some facts about the mighty Susquehanna River:

  • Geologically, the Susquehanna River is considered the oldest major river system in the world. It dates back to the Paleozoic Era (543 to 248 million years ago), and there is evidence that the flow of the ancient Susquehanna was established early enough that it predated the formation of the Appalachian mountains over 300 million years ago.

  • The Susquehanna is the largest river lying entirely within the United States that drains into the Atlantic Ocean. Its main stem is 464 miles in length and flows through three states: New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. It starts in Cooperstown, New York, and ends at Havre Grace at the Chesapeake Bay, in Maryland.   Bonus fun fact:  I slipped and ended up knee deep into the Susquehanna at a rest stop/picnic area in upstate New York on my way to a college visit and didn't have another outfit with me.

  • The Susquehanna is the single largest/longest “fly-way” for migratory birds on the East Coast.

There is an unactivated trackable for the FTF.

Parking is available at the Deer Creek Picnic area at Susquehanna State Park. Entrance fees are collected on the honor system. The day use service charge for this area is: Daily $2 per vehicle; out-of-state residents $4 per vehicle.

Deer Creek Trail - Blazed in green, the trail begins and ends at the Picnic Area. The Deer Creek Trail has magnificent views and giant trees. A moderate to difficult trail with a distance of 2.1 miles.

This area is open to seasonal hunting. Please be aware and wear blaze orange during those time.
