Having had the notion to place a cache in this park for some time now, I have been spurred to action by the publishing of the nearby cache for the Find Your Chesapeake geotrail - Middle Branch Park cache. It is great that the FYC Geotrail is bringing people to this lesser known tributary to the Chesapeake. This completely unofficial and unsanctioned FYC bonus cache provides finders a view of both the historic (and decrepit) Veterans Memorial Bridge (C. 1916) over the Middle Branch of the Patapsco, as well as a nice view of the river itself.
West Covington Park itself was built by the National Aquarium for the City of Baltimore and funded with over $7 Million in public dollars. Originally the land was aquired by the Aquarium to build an aquatic life center to support the actual aquarium, but plans for that fell through when the Aquarium decided the land was too valuable to develop themselves and decided to sell it out to the development arm of a global sports apparel maker based nearby (Note, I'm generalizing the history of this spit of land, but it's recent past is contentious to say the least.) Anyhow, please enjoy this cache while it lasts. While no concrete plans are currently in the offing to bulldoze this beautiful park into the ground, it is certainly doomed to one day become another steel and glass building looming over the water. In the meantime, this park is open to the public from dawn to dusk, so please enjoy.
1/11/2026 Update: Cache has been moved to a new spot that is more finder friendly. Even if you're on a long day of caching, I highly recommend you take a couple extra minutes to walk out to the end of the pier (the original GZ) and enjoy the view of this historic bridge and the beautiful scenery.
