Geocache Description:

There once was an old red barn here at this site. You can still see the elm tree that stood in front of it. The barn was built by Reginald Whitney, Sr. in the late 1950s. He used it to keep cattle and store hay. He also had a restaurant and service station here. In the 1960s New York state bought the land. The red barn was considered a non-conforming structure so it was not maintained. As the barn aged, it became a roadside attraction and one of the most widely photographed sites in the Adirondacks. Visitors also went inside the barn and because the safety of the public was a concern the DEC suddenly tore down the barn on December 21,2016. It was unexpected and many people mourned the loss of the old red barn. It is a lesson for us all: Appreciate the place, the moment as it may not be there the next time you blink. Rest in peace old red barn!
