A Cache of Ice and Fire #20 - Ygritte.
One of a series of caches that will take you on an adventure into the Gollans Stream area between Wainuiomata and Eastbourne. The series is designed to be accessed via either Rata Ridge Track (from the end of Lees Grove in Wainuiomata) or from the Main Ridge Track above Eastbourne. These caches are based on established Bait Lines through the reserve area. Please respect the hard work of the volunteers who work in this area - do not touch, alter, or damage any of the pest control traps. None of the caches are located near a trap - there is no need for you to come into contact with them. GPS reception in this area can be patchy - almost all of these caches are therefore hidden directly on or beside the Bait Line.
This series is named after some of the many characters from the A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels (later adapted into the successful television show "Game of Thrones"). This particular cache celebrates Ygritte.
Ygritte was part of a wildling patrol encountered by Jon Snow in the Skirling Pass. When he discovered she was a woman, he forced her to yield rather than killing her. When Qhorin Halfhand, the leader of Jon's party, learned about this, he ordered Jon to kill her, but he secretly let her go instead. Ygritte was with Rattleshirt when the wildling leader captured Jon and Qhorin, and when Jon yielded on Qhorin's orders, she vouched for him and helped convince the other wildlings to let him join them. When Jon Snow was assigned to the band of Tormund Giantsbane, Ygritte joined his band as well, and began expressing her interest in Jon, but he would not lie with her. When the group arrived at the Fist of the First Men and Mance learned that Jon had concealed the presence of the Night's Watch there, he was ready to kill Jon until Ygritte saved him by saying they were sleeping together. Afterwards, they made good on her statement.
