Geocache Description:

---Old Walton has been swallowed up by the sea long ago, its church having vanished in 1798. The estates about this church belonged to St Paul's Cathedral and over one of the stalls we found the Latin words meaning Overthrown by the Sea in-stead of the customary name of the manor. My picture from a old post card of All Saints Church Walton on the Naze dates from 1897, and the church tower had just been completed one year when this picture was taken. The thatched building was The Hoy, an eightenth- century hostelry reputed to have been associated with smugglers. By 1906 The Hoy and its neighbouring cottage with the porch, had been demolished. ------------- A small inclusion here from Simon Knott on Essex Churches.----Nothing survives in Walton from before about 1800-the medieval parish church was washed away by the sea. All Saints is the 1870s work of Henry Stone in an entirely medievalist Early English style, shoe-horned into a difficult cramped, sloping site where the roads from Thorpe and Frinton come together. It is a hard church to photograph from the outside, especially in the early morning with the bright light flooding from the sea.--- You are looking for a small film pot here, dont forget your scribbler, and Oh, good luck to you.——-Well Walton on the Naze in the evening sunshine, and a FTF for the lovely Sue Doggywalker, and in the words of old Harry Webb, Congratulations.
