About the sculpture
The sculpture was given to Iceland in 1991 to celebrate, at that time, the 50 years of good diplomatic relationship between Iceland and the USA. The two countries have always had a good relationship, and the links between them are quite versatile. Iceland was home to thousands of Americans as the Navy had a military base in Keflavík for decades after the war. Thousands of Icelanders have also lived in the US, sought education and work there for many decades. Many families in Iceland have family connections with the people in the States. In addition to the good diplomatic links, the sculpture is also a symbol of the good cultural, social and commercial connections.
