Geocache Description:

Ainderby is 3 miles south-west of Northallerton on the A684. It is recorded in the Domesday Book. Ainderby War Memorial stands in the grounds of St Helen’s Church which is adjacent to the first of two sharp bends of the road as you approach from the east, i.e. from Northallerton direction. The memorial is visible from the church lych-gate, but the inscriptions cannot be read from there. The Memorial is a square stone pillar topped by a Celtic Cross, with interlace Celtic knots carved in each arm. The lower part of the pillar stands in a circular base inscribed with the Dedication

TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF

(9 named Heroes of the First World War)

OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918.

In addition to the Memorial Cross outside the Church, there is a framed Illuminated Scroll inside the Church which records those who fell. This Scroll, strangely, refers to the "European War 1914 - 1916", and lists one hero, Benjamin Langton, who is not named on the Memorial Cross. In the Gallery of this cache is a photo of the Scroll which is inscribed;-

European War 1914 – 1916

The Roll of Honour

(ten names)

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
