"This cache is part of an experiment that allows the use of Augmented Reality (AR) apps to find the cache. At the end of this experiment, Geocaching HQ will decide if this cache will be grandfathered or archived. Geocaching HQ reserves the right to archive this cache at any time if conditions change. If you have found this cache and would like to give feedback on your experience, please fill out this survey.”
To play this Augmented Reality geocache you will need to download an app called "metaverse". It is available on both android and ios devices. You will also need to give the app permission to access your phone's camera for the last stage to work.
The "special tool required" attribute refers to needing a smartphone and this app.
The cache is loosely based on stories of ghosts in the city of Bath. There are 5 "Ghost Stage" locations, which you can visit in any order. For each of these stages, there is a Metaverse "Experience". If you are successful, each ghost will give you a piece of information. Please take note of this information as you will need it at the final stage. The 5 Ghost stages are:
Theatre Royal
Medieval Wall
Francis Hotel
Gravel Walk
Royal Crescent
AFTER you have visited all 5 Ghost Stages, you should proceed to the Final AR stage (Lansdown Crescent) which is at the posted coordinates. Completing that AR stage will provide you with coordinates for the geocache.
There is an additional AR experience called "Introduction". This one can be played anywhere, and gives some more information about the overall experience. I recommend you play this at home before you set out, especially if this is your first Metaverse experience. If the Introduction works OK you should be OK in the field.
Please note that Metaverse requires an active internet connection to work. I found no problems with signal at any of the locations but this can vary depending on network.
The link below will launch the Metaverse app. Please note that this link may not work in all third-party geocaching apps, but does work using the "official" geocaching app or from a browser. Alternatively you can use this QR code in the Metaverse app. And a third option is to search for "Ghosts of Bath" from within the Metaverse app. Once you are within 40m of each waypoint you will be able to click on the relevant AR experience and follow the instructions onscreen
Ghosts of Bath
In the Metaverse app, you should then see something like this.
Don't forget to take notes as you go
Final cache location is easily accessible from a public footpath, no fences to cross.
