ADVANCED WARNING:
Commencing in April 2026, we will start to archive many of our caches as the maintenance load is becoming a major concern as our capacity to make regular visits to our caches declines. The date has been chosen so that, apart from unforeseen circumstances, all of caches will be available to those visiting Tasmania for the Tassie Event in early March 2026. From its source to its mouth, the Mersey River flows through varied topography, rich agricultural land and many interesting centres of population. The Meandering the Mersey (MTM) series will follow, as much as practical, the course of the Mersey River with caches being placed at varying intervals. We trust you will enjoy the area.
As the Mersey River flows from its source northwards, it flows along the southern side of Mount Roland and the Gog Range passing through the very deep Mersey River Gorge before flowing around the eastern end of the Gog Range and onto Kimberley and Merseylea. The Meandering The Mersey series would be incomplete without including the spectacular Mersey River Gorge.
Access to the lookout over the Mersey River Gorge is through the Alum Cliffs Reserve. Like an increasing number of locations in Tasmania, Alum Cliffs is dual named tulumpanga
The lookout over the Mersey River Gorge is about 800m from the carpark and is listed as one of Tasmania's 60 Great Short Walks.
The area is highly significant to the aboriginal people of the area as it contained a special ochre used for ceremonial occasions. There are two caches which explore the theme:
GC5KVHA Alum Cliffs and Gorge
GCR8N8 Red Ochre Hill
Both caches are located close to the lookout.
This cache, MTM - Alum Cliffs Reserve, is located a short distance from the carpark. It is not close to the lookout because of the other caches in the area. This cache is a regular size Sistema container with ample room for swaps.
