The "Golfo di Panzano" is the northernmost little bay of the Adriatic Sea and is quite a busy body of water. To the north there is the mouth of the Timavo River and extensive moorings for small boats, and a separate inlet to the Port of Monfalcone with frequent traffic in the form of barges taking fuel to the gigawatt power station whose tall smokestack is a familiar landmark, and the Fincantieri, one of the world's biggest shipyards. The Western side of the bay ends in Punta Sdobba, where the Isonzo River enters the sea. The area is characterised by tracts of land reclaimed from the sea during the last century, and the cache is placed on the dike built to reclaim land to the south-east of Monfalcone. The operation seems to have been abandoned as there is still water on both sides and the result is a curious walk that one can take along a path that goes out into the sea.
Take the road past the Terme Romane. This was once the main road to Trieste, but the bridge that crossed to San Giovanni di Duino was never rebuilt after WW2. You can park where the asphalt ends, or turn right onto a rough but perfectly driveable road for another kilometer to the indicated Parking Waypoint. From here a footpath takes you through some bushes and then out onto the dike itself. The distance from the original parking is less than 1km but may take 15-20 minutes to reach the cache as the path has to traverse some big rocks. The new parking adds another km but on a good road.

There are 450m of path on the narrow strip of land going out to the cache. The going is quite rough in a few places, where one has to pick one's way between the rocks, but mostly medium and occasionally easy. It's not as bad as it may look at first... I'm an old guy and I've done it many times. Takes me about 10 minutes each way!

Il "Golfo di Panzano" è la piccola baia più settentrionale del Mare Adriatico ed è un bacino d'acqua piuttosto trafficato. Sul lato nord c'è la foce del fiume Timavo e ampi ormeggi per le barche piccole, e un'insenatura separata per il porto di Monfalcone con molto traffico di chiatte che portano carburante alla centrale elettrica gigawatt il cui alto fumaiolo è un punto di riferimento ben conosciuto, e i Fincantieri, uno dei più grandi cantieri navali nel mondo. Il lato occidentale della baia termina a Punta Sdobba, dove il fiume Isonzo entra nel mare. La zona è caratterizzata da tratti di terra bonificata dal mare nel corso dell'ultimo secolo, e la cache è posta sulla diga costruita per bonificare i terreni a sud-est di Monfalcone. L'operazione sembra di essere stata abbandonata perché c'è ancora acqua su entrambi i lati e il risultato è una curiosa passeggiata che si può percorrere lungo un sentiero che si protende verso il mare.
Prendi la strada che porta oltre le Terme Romane. Questa era una volta la strada principale per Trieste, ma il ponte che attraversava il fiume per arrivare a San Giovanni di Duino non fu mai ricostruito dopo la seconda guerra mondiale. È possibile parcheggiare dove finisce l'asfalto oppure svoltare a destra su una strada bianca accidentata ma perfettamente percorribile per ancora un chilometro fino al parcheggio indicato come "waypoint". Da qui un sentiero porta attraverso la vegetazione fitta e poi sulla diga stessa. La distanza dak parcheggio originale è inferiore a 1 km, ma potrebbero essere necessari 15-20 minuti per raggiungere la cache poiché il percorso deve attraversare qualche sasso grande. Dal parcheggio nuove si mette un'altro chilometro ma su una strada facile.

Ci sono 450 metri di sentiero sulla stretta striscia di terra che porta al nascondiglio. Il terreno è piuttosto accidentato in alcuni punti, dove bisogna farsi strada tra le rocce, ma per lo più è di media difficoltà e a tratti facile. Non è così male come potrebbe sembrare a prima vista... Sono un vecchio e l'ho fatto molte volte. Ci metto circa 10 minuti a tratta!
