The PandaMania art exhibit took place in the summer of 2004 throughout DC. After the exhibit ended, the panda statues were sold or donated. There are only a few of these statues left in the area. This series will bring you to the ones that I've found.
This particular panda is East West by Byron Peck. This jumpsuited panda displays images from the west (the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, on the front) and east (a Chinese landscape). According to the artist, the bear was designed "as a fusion of Asian tattoo, landscape and patterns being juxtaposed to an image of the Jefferson Memorial emerging through a matching trompe-l'oeil hole in the chest and back of the Panda."
I saw that the library reopened yesterday and just as expected the panda is back! The panda is also right under a security camera so the cache is across the street...but still visible from the panda.
