Geocache Description:

The punching tree is a Sequoiadendron giganteum (Giant Sequoia). It is more commonly known as the Giant Redwood or Wellingtonia and is native to California. Giant Sequoias are the world’s largest trees (but not the tallest). They grow to an average height of 50–85 m (164–279 ft) and 6–8 m (20–26 ft) in diameter. They are covered with a beautiful soft, spongy bark - so soft in fact that one can punch them quite hard and feel no pain hence the name the punching tree. Giant Sequoias were brought back to the UK in the 1850s and the trees in Kilmory are thought to be around 150 years old. William J Hooker, Professor of Botany at the University of Glasgow and later Director of Kew Gardens, is reputed to have laid out the grounds about the year 1830 and to have furnished many of the exotic shrubs and plants that flourished here. The 'punching tree' is it's local nickname but we definitely don't suggest you punch it. You could give it wee hug instead!
