Geocache Description:

Inizio sentiero

Start of trail

The trail begins with a slight climb that goes into the woods. After a few hundred meters is hidden the first cache of this serie. Continuing a couple of hairpin bends you immediately gain altitude until you reach the plain where is located the "Croce del Civello".

The path

This series of caches will lead you to the top of Monte Verena where the homonymous fort of the First World War can still be visited.
You can park your car near WP1 and then continue on foot along the dirt road that heads to the east side of the mountain.
The path climbs without tearing towards the top and is almost all wooded. The summit can be reached in just over an hour's walk, after having touched the "cross of Civello" and "Le casermette". A slightly longer alternative allows passing through the huts located a little lower in the meadows to the east. The route is suitable both for a nice walk or for those who love cycling.
The total difference in height is just over 400 m. On the summit is located the fort Verena, at an altitude of 2019m, with attached shelter from which you can enjoy a superb view. For the return you must follow the track of the ski slopes for the initial section, then deviate to the right and take a sweeter path that comes out a few hundred meters from the parking lot of departure.

Forte Verena

Fort Verena was built from 1910 to 1914 by the Military Corps of Verona, with the main task of defending the border between the Italian state and the Austro-Hungarian Empire (along the border line that can currently be placed between the province of Vicenza and Trento). It is located at an altitude of 2,019 meters on the top of the homonymous Mount Verena. The fort is located in the municipal territory of Roana, and overlooks with cliffs overlooking the underlying val d'Assa.
At 4 o'clock on May 24, 1915 from the fort Verena the first Italian cannon shot was launched on the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni, with which the hostilities between Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire were opened. On 12 June 1915 the fort was hit and destroyed by a 305 mm projectile penetrated into the structure and exploded inside it. On 22 May 1916, during the Strafexpedition, the position was occupied by the Austro-Hungarian troops in the hands to which it remained for the rest of the war. Its strategic role ended with the end of the war in 1918.
