You can learn a bit about the history, art and culture of a people through its burial sites. While you are here you might like to have a wander and see if you can find the oldest grave. The Burwood Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Melbourne and dates back to 1857.
Some people find such places rather morbid, but I find it a sober reminder of the preciousness of life and thus to live it well and to have a grateful heart for all my blessings.
This is a densely populated and well used site. So well used that an 85 year old man discovered in February 2015 that his 42 year old grave plot had been sold off without his knowledge and that someone else had been buried there since 1981 (Herald Sun).
Visiting hours are from 7.00 AM to 5.30 PM and 7.00 AM to 7.30 PM during daylight saving.
The main entrance is at the corner of Gilmour St and Burwood Hwy. Street parking is on the northward bound side of Gilmour St. There are a few spots available near the entrance on the southward bound side of Gilmour St.
There are walking tracks throughout the cemetery. The cache is easily accessible from one of these tracks – there is no need to traipse all over a burial site.
The poem below contains a clue to this cache which is about the size of an apricot. After signing the log book, please ensure that you hide it in such a way that the extraction aid is pointing outwards but is not visible to those who are not intentionally looking for it. BYO pen.
LITTLE MOUSE LITTLE MOUSE
By Cherryslice88
Little mouse little mouse
Come out of your little house
The sun has gone
I stretch and yawn
Winter’s moon
Starry June
Owls call out
Bats on route
Little mouse little mouse
Come out of your little house
Grains, fruits and seeds
Foraging for your needs
Autumn dew
Springy hue
Summer breeze
Dress in tees
Little mouse little mouse
Come out of your little house
I have come for a visit
Please don’t be shy or timid.
