Geocache Description:

The Geocache

A small bison within a container.

The Church

St Mary’s of Callow is built on high ground and from the churchyard there is a good view north over the city of Hereford. The church dates from 1830, however it was altered in 1884. It is constructed with squared and rock-faced sandstone with sandstone dressings and a Welsh slate roof. It possesses a west tower, two-bay nave, one-bay
chancel, vestry and organ chamber. Inside the font has been dated as 13th Century and the majority of the windows are dedicated to members of the Horton and Dimery families.

Access

Parking is limited since the Church is on a junction. A vehicle can get off the road close to Ground Zero with great views of the Church and towards Hereford.

The Settlement

The small rural village of Callow, surrounded by farmland, has changed little over the years. High on Callow Hill stands St Mary's church, overlooking the southern approaches to the city of Hereford. On a clear day, when the sun lights up the cathedral tower and sparkles on the river Wye flowing past the Bishop's Palace, the view is breathtaking.

The Forge has played a very important part in the history of Callow for 400 years, and the Howells family have lived there almost as long. It ceased to be a blacksmith's shop in 1944, and Mr Frank Howells opened a grocer's shop there in 1949, combined with the post office which was opened in 1964. However, its doors were finally closed in 1985 with the retirement of the postmistress. The school, situated on the opposite side of the road to the Church, closed in 1953. After closure the building was used as the parish hall and as such, helps to maintain the life of the village.
