Hier, am Standort des heutigen Rathauses, befand sich zu Zeiten der Römer das Praetorium, der Sitz des Statthalters und politisches Zentrum der Colonia.
Im Jahre 69 n.Chr., nachdem Vitellius, "der Kommandierende des des niedergermanischen Heeres, von seinen Soldaten zum Kaiser ausgerufen wurde, geriet sein Speisezimmer (…) in Brand - dies war das erste Feuer auf Kölner Stadtgebiet,
über das berichtet wurde.
Laut Sueton kommentierte Vitellius diesen Vorfall mit den Worten „Seid guten Mutes, für uns hat es geleuchtet“.
Das gute Omen jedoch war keins: Vitellius wurde am Ende des Jahres in Rom getötet.

In 69 AD, after Vitellius, "the commander of the Lower Germanic Army, was proclaimed as Roman Emperor by his soldiers, his dining room (...) was on fire - this was the first fire in the city of cologne, about that has been reported.
According to Suetonius, Vitellius commented on this incident with the words "Cheer up, it has shone for us".
The good omen, however, was none: Vitellius was killed in Rome later that year.
