Geocache Description:

The natural shoreline of Auckland City was changed dramatically by reclamation works in the 19th to early 20th centuries, the development of rail connections, and the construction of the Harbour Bridge and motorway in the 1950s and 60s. The marinas and commercial wharves, which now stretch from Westhaven through to Judge’s Bay, are very different from the foreshore sighted by the first settlers to Auckland.

Auckland Council has set up a 5km running/walking/cycling route that follows the original shoreline. To find this cache, follow the route and collect information from the interpretive panels along the way.

The following guidelines may help you:

  • The interpretive panels have all been added as waypoints to this cache page.
  • You need to collect information from six of the waypoints (interpretive panels), to find the values of a, b, c, d, e and f.
  • You do not need to visit the waypoints (interpretive panels) in any particular order.
  • The FINAL is hidden near one end of the route. The most direct route to the FINAL is not the best route.
  • At the final location, you do not need to cross the barrier!

Find the FINAL at S 36° 51.abc E 174° 47.def, where:

a = the number of times the word "dolphin" features in the first paragraph under the heading "Early occupation" at Waypoint 1.
b = the number of times the word "dolphin" features in the first paragraph under the heading "St Mary's Bay / Ko Takere Haere" at Waypoint 3.
c = the number of letters in the sixth word under the heading "More Reclamations" at Waypoint 10.

Checksum = 4

d = the number of letters in the fourth word under the heading "Jean Batten" at Waypoint 14.
e = the number of letters in the fourth word in the second paragraph under the heading "Constitution Hill" at Waypoint 18.
f = the number of letters in the third word under the heading "Campbell's Point" at Waypoint 23.

Checksum = 11
