Geocaching HQ Admin: From June 06, 2018 until March 06, 2019, Geocaching HQ conducted an Augmented Reality (AR) experiment. During that time, cache owners were allowed to submit Mystery Caches that required the finder to download and use an AR app to find the cache. The goal of the experiment was to see how the geocaching community would use AR technology. Cache owners placed more than 600 AR caches around the world!

Unfortunately, the AR apps which met HQ’s requirements for the experiment have been or are currently in the process of being discontinued. As a result, it is currently not possible for finders to have the AR experience that was originally intended. Therefore, HQ has decided to archive all active AR caches placed during the experiment period. We are respectfully requesting that all AR cache owners please remove the cache container and contents as soon as possible.

As technology evolves, we look forward to seeing how Augmented Reality might have future applications for geocaching. Thank you to all cache owners who participated in the experiment!

“This cache is part of an experiment that allows the use of Augmented Reality (AR) apps to find the cache. At the end of this experiment, Geocaching HQ will decide if this cache will be grandfathered or archived. Geocaching HQ reserves the right to archive this cache at any time if conditions change. If you have found this cache and would like to give feedback on your experience, please fill out this survey.”

To play this Augmented Reality geocache you will need to download an app called "metaverse". It is available on both android and ios devices.

Metaverse requires that the smart phone has at least a gyroscope, accelerometer, and a camera to function properly.

This cache will take you round the main memorials and locations around Southampton that are linked to the Titanic, this experience was made for both tourists and geocachers so there is a bit more historical info than a typical geocache. There are 5 locations plus the final GZ, it should take no longer than 2 hours to complete, the first location is at the icon coordinates, the musicians' memorial. At each of the 5 locations you will need to complete a task before moving on, these might be questions or taking a specific photo. Once all 5 tasks have been completed you will receive the final coordinates, the waypoints MUST be completed in order.

The link below will launch the Metaverse app. Please note that this link may not work in all third-party geocaching apps, but does work using the "official" geocaching app or from a browser. Alternatively you can use this QR code in the Metaverse app or any QR scanner, alternatively you can search for the 'Titanic Trail' in Metaverse for the group of experiences. Once you are within 40m of each waypoint you will be able to click on the relevant AR experience and follow the instructions onscreen

Some AR Tips!

  • 🔋🔋AR experiences can use up a lot of battery on a mobile device! Once an experience is complete the result is saved, you can come back another day to do the rest if you're low on power.🔋🔋
  • These AR experiences save as you go. If at any point the AR app seems to hang, you can end the experience or kill the app and reload to continue.
  • Sometimes the text and character might be slow to load, if the button has appeared at the bottom but nothing else wait a few seconds for the rest of the scene to load, speed can be affected by the phone and signal.
  • At a Metaverse waypoint, if the camera view opens, look up and look around until you find the character! If you want to lock them in place, on iOS and Android tap the icon in the top corner and you'll be prompted to "Pin" them to a surface - move the camera around slowly until the dot on a surface turns green, then hit Pin (you can also resize the character by pinching them). You can also turn AR off in the top corner so the characters are always centered. This might also help prevent the app from crashing
  • When asked to take photos to complete tasks make sure all text in the photo is in focus and clear, the app is reading the text to compare to an answer
  • If you're in a 360 photo/video sometimes it doesn't fill the whole screen, swipe with your finger to pan until you find the image
  • In Metaverse if you receive a "Network Error", you can cancel and restart. In this experience that won't lose any progress.
  • In Metaverse if you receive a popup after ending it saying the experience is complete there may still be more to to come; you can 'Skip' without 'Sharing' your experience.
