Geocache Description:

Erosion at Sheep's Head

A little walk to Sheep's Head on the tracks of the very old geological history of this country.

Geology

Bedrock

Once upon a time , between 410 and 350 millions of years before present, it was the Devonian.
Devonian is a geological epoch belonging to the Paleozoic period. In the former classification, it was in the middle of the primary period.
Devonian is after Silurian and followed by Carboniferous.
Paleogeography
During Devonian, the continents are quite different in the size and shape than today.
Old red sandstone
During this epoch, sands and muds among montains are deposited by large rivers systems. Basins received large thickness of sediments (Old Red Sandstone).
After that, during Carboniferous, other layers of sediments covered the Devonian one.
After millions of years, the tectonical movements made the actual continent and the old sea floor goes outside the water and begins to be eroded. That's what append here ! The Carboniferous layer has been totally eroded at Sheep's Head and it's now the turn of the Devonian layers that we could see here.

Erosion

Erosion consist of alteration, modification or destruction of rock by different means. The erosion could be chemical or physical (mecanical).
Chemical erosion is due, for example, to marine salt or organic decomposition of plants.
Physical erosion is due to wind, rain, freeze.
Erosion is not an homogeneous process. The hardest part of rock resists longer to the elements. With chemical erosion, it could drive to holes, alveols or taffone.

Questions

You will find the answers in the red frame on the picture below:
Question 1 Observ carefully the rock behind the red frame. In your opinion, what kind of erosion is on progress ? Chemical, Physical or both?
Question 2 Estimate the mean size of the marks of erosion in each case (chemical, physical) ?
Question 3 If chemical, try to guess what is the main agent of erosion ? same thing if physical ?.
