Geocache Description:

  • You are looking for a small ammo box.
  •  This is the story of The Lost Town of Monroe, VA and how it relates to Smith Mountain Lake.
  • Monroe, VA was a town in Pittsylvania County founded in 1818 on the banks of the Staunton River.  The Anthony family had vast holdings in the area.  The land was sold to many prominent families in preparation of building a bustling community.  But development never took place due to economic depression and the Civil War.  Traffic routes shifted and the town remained a small community.
  • When the Appalachian Power Company decided to build a dam in the area in 1963, Monroe was chosen as its location, and most of the town was flooded, earning the area the name “The Sunken City”.  The modern day location of Monroe is in the approximate area of Vista Pointe.
