Bull Pond Preserve is a 71 acre property owned by the Harwinton Land Trust. The property includes a 20 acre pond and has a 2 mile looping trail system. Geocaches are now hidden somewhere along each of the well marked trails out here. Walk along the pond from the parking area to the trail head located just past the observation deck..
The Bull Pond Preserve was donated to the Harwinton Land Trust by the Heflin Family in 1988. Alan Helfin loved nature and visited nature preserves around the world. He insisted to his familty that the property remain a protected wildlife preserve.
The property is located on Locust Road (off of CT Route 4) across the road from the Harwinton Fairgrounds. There is a mapbox is located at the trailhead just past the observation platform. Alternatively you can print a map in advance from the Harwinton Land Trust webpage at www.harwintonlandtrust.org (click on Bull Pond link). The caretakers left a wonderful surprise at the beginning of the trail that will bring smiles in July!
This is a great recreation area that includes the possibilities for fishing, kayaking and hiking, nature viewing and photography. There are benches and an observation deck along the way. They also keep the parking lot plowed in the winter, so these trails are also perfect for snowshoeing or cross country skiing. Please be considerate of others that are enjoying their time out here, and stay on the trails and pick up any trash you might see. The land trust would appreciate you taking pictures and posting them with your logs of this nice area to promote visitation.
