Geocache Description:


This is a 2 stage multi cache with on road parking available.

Bedale War Memorial is in the grounds of St. Gregory's Church and consists of a stone Moline Cross on a pillar which has two carved relief panels, one of Christ and one of St George. The Cross and its pillar are set on an angled square stone base. The memorial is dedicated :

TO THE GLORY

OF GOD

AND TO THE HONOURED

MEMORY OF THE MEN

FROM THE PARISH OF BEDALE

WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES

FOR THEIR KING AND COUNTRY

IN THE GREAT WAR

1914 – 1919

THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE


The pillar carries the names of 45 men who lost their lives in the First World War, these names being grouped according to the year of death, the last being one who died in 1919.


The base carries the names of 22 who fell in the Second World War.


The co-ordinates bring you to the memorial and by using the names of those commemorated you can work out the co-ordinates for the final cache location as follows:-

C = Number of letters in the surname of the last named hero from 1916
D = Number of letters in the surname of the second or third heroes of WW2
E = Number of letters in the surname of Benjamin who gave his life in 1917
F = Number of letters in the surname of John William who gave his life in 1918
G = Number of letters in the surname of Harold who gave his life in 1916
H = Number of heroes listed as giving their life in 1914&
Checksum = 29
