Geocache Description:


This is a 2 stage multi cache with on road parking available.

Crakehall War Memorial is in the grounds St Gregory’s Church on the Village Green and is a Celtic cross with shaft set on a tapering plinth and base. The shaft is decorated with base relief panels of flowers and shields, while the cross has a central rose with oak leaves on the arms.
The Memorial is dedicated on the face of its shaft:-

IN PROUD AND LOVING

MEMORY OF

THE MEN FROM

THIS PARISH

WHO GAVE

THEIR LIVES FOR

FREEDOM'S CAUSE

IN THE/ GREAT WAR<

1914-1918

On the plinth are the names of twelve men who fell in the First World War followed by:-

SONS OF THIS PLACE LET THIS OF YOU BE SAID

THAT YOU WHO LIVE ARE WORTHY OF THE DEAD.

THEY GAVE THEIR LIVES THAT YOU WHO LIVE MAY REAP

A RICHER HARVEST ERE YOU FALL ASLEEP.

On the rear face of the shaft is

SECOND WORLD WAR

1939 -1945

DIED IN THE SERVICE

OF THEIR COUNTRY

followed by three names, then

FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH

followed by a fourth name

The co-ordinates bring you to the memorial and by using the inscription and names of those commemorated you can work out the co-ordinates for the final cache location as follows:-

The cache can be found at N54º 18.PQR  W001º 37.STU where

P = third digit of the year this memorial was erected

Q = number of letters in the surname of WW1 hero William

R = number of letters in the surname of WW1 hero Henry

S = number of letters in the surname of WW2 hero Robert H.

T = number of middle names shown for John Thompson

U = Total letters in the full name of the 4th hero in the left column for WW1

Checksum = 30
