Geocache Description:

This cache was originally placed by jardisliketardis - thanks for the description from your original cache which I have reused below. I wanted to replace it as it was one of the first I found and had walked past many times not realising it was there.

A cache celebrating the Thistle Inn and its most famous (apocryphal) patron.

The Thistle Inn, built in 1840, is the oldest hotel in New Zealand still trading from its original site. It received the second liquor license issued in New Zealand. Originally the Thistle was only metres from the shoreline, and patrons often arrived by boat.

The (unsubstantiated) story goes that renowned Ngati Toa chief Te Rauparaha would pull up his waka right outside the pub, wander in and order a whiskey and no one had the gumption to charge him. Te Rauparaha is perhaps most famous for composing "Ka Mate", the haka made famous by the All Blacks.

The cache is a bison containing only a log sheet, so you will have to bring your own pen and possibly something to help get the log sheet out. When placed, the cache was under a rock. You will need to be stealthy, as the area is frequented by public servant muggles.
