El Lugar
La Plaza de toros Real de San Carlos está ubicada en la zona de Real de San Carlos, a 4 km del barrio histórico de Colonia del Sacramento, capital del departamento de Colonia, Uruguay. Es la única plaza que se mantiene en Uruguay y fue erigida con un estilo mudéjar, muy similar a las plazas de toros de España, conservando arcos y algunos detalles de circunferencia. Es una obra realizada por el arquitecto argentino José Marcovich y el ingeniero Dupuy. Se inauguró el 9 de enero de 1910 contando con ocho corridas oficiales, si bien hubo más de ochenta, pues se continuó utilizando el espacio para espectáculos aún bajo la prohibición de corridas por parte del presidente José Batlle y Ordóñez en 1912.
La plaza fue construida en ocho meses con el aval del parlamento uruguayo, quien otorgó los permisos para iniciar las obras del complejo. El material utilizado para su edificación fue suministrado por la fábrica de ladrillos y mosaicos La Arenisca. El diámetro del lugar asciende a los 100 metros, con un ruedo de 50 metros de diámetro.
La estructura de hierro de la obra fue traída de Gran Bretaña y armada en su totalidad en Colonia. Este hierro oxidado de la construcción se puede apreciar en parte de lo que conforma las ruinas de la plaza, considerada Monumento Histórico Nacional.
Manuel Caballero, hijo del cónsul español, tramitó el permiso municipal para edificar un complejo turístico en Real de San Carlos. El sitio se llamó Complejo Turístico Nicolás Mihanovich y contaba con muelle, hotel y la plaza de toros.
El lugar funcionó dos años consecutivos, hasta que en 1912 fueron prohibidas las corridas bajo la presidencia de Batlle y Ordóñez. En la actualidad, la plaza se encuentra en ruinas y no se puede ingresar a la misma por riesgo de derrumbe.

The Royal Bullring of San Carlos is located in the area of Real de San Carlos, 4 km from the historic district of Colonia del Sacramento, capital of the department of Colonia, Uruguay. It is the only square that remains in Uruguay and was built with a Mudejar style, very similar to the bullring of Spain, retaining arcs and some details of circumference. It is a work done by the Argentine architect José Marcovich and the engineer Dupuy. It was inaugurated on January 9, 1910, with eight official bullfights, although there were more than eighty, since the space for shows was still used under the prohibition of bullfighting by President José Batlle y Ordóñez in 1912.
The square was built in eight months with the endorsement of the Uruguayan parliament, who granted the permits to start the works of the complex. The material used for its construction was supplied by the La Arenisca brick and mosaic factory. The diameter of the place amounts to 100 meters, with a ring of 50 meters in diameter.
The iron structure of the work was brought from Great Britain and armed entirely in Cologne. This oxidized iron of the construction can be appreciated in part of what makes up the ruins of the square, considered a National Historic Monument.
Manuel Caballero, son of the Spanish consul, processed the municipal permit to build a tourist complex in Real de San Carlos. The site was called Nicolás Mihanovich Tourist Complex and had a pier, hotel and the bullring.
The place worked two consecutive years, until in 1912 the bullfights were banned under the presidency of Batlle and Ordóñez. At present, the square is in ruins and can not be entered because of the risk of collapse.
